I didn’t plan on becoming that dog mom. You know, the one covered in flour, with pumpkin puree in her hair, giggling on the kitchen floor while her dog watches like a sous-chef.
But then Andy started having tummy troubles.
He’s always been my goofy, tail-wagging shadow, but I noticed he was scratching more and seemed less energetic after certain treats. A quick trip to the vet confirmed it: a mild gluten intolerance.
I went home, opened the pantry, and made a promise to Andy: no more guesswork. I’d make treats myself — healthy, simple, and gluten free.

his recipe is intentionally simple — just real, dog-friendly goodness:
½ cup pumpkin puree (unsweetened – NOT pie filling)
1 egg
1 cup almond flour or oat flour (gluten-free certified)
1 tbsp coconut oil (melted)
Optional: dash of cinnamon or crushed dog-safe herbs like parsley
Tip: Always check your labels — xylitol is toxic to dogs!
Preheat oven to 175°C / 350°F.
In a bowl, whisk egg , add pumpkin puree and melted coconut oil.
Fold in almond flour. Mix until dough forms.
Roll out on a floured surface and cut into shapes (or use silicone molds).
Place on parchment-lined tray and bake 20–25 mins , until firm and golden.
Cool before giving to your pup.
🍪 Makes ~20 small treats depending on size
Pumpkin – Great for digestion, rich in fiber and beta-carotene
Almond flour – High in healthy fats and vitamin E
Coconut oil – Boosts skin & coat health
Egg – Protein-packed and helps bind the dough

Got a picky pup like Andy? Here are my go-to add-ins:
Mash in ½ banana for a sweeter taste
Add shredded carrot or apple for texture
Sub oat flour if you’re out of almond
When picking up ingredients, here’s what I always double check:
✅ Pumpkin puree – label should say 100% pumpkin, no sugar/spices
✅ Flour – certified gluten free (some oats are cross-contaminated)
✅ Coconut oil – cold-pressed, virgin, no added flavoring
✅ No xylitol – especially in peanut butter or sweeteners
✅ Eggs – pasture-raised if possible for extra nutrients
➡️ Make sure you’re not using these unsafe ingredients
The moment Andy hears the crack of an egg or the beep of the oven — he’s there.
Eyes wide. Tail wagging.
Some days he lies beside the oven door, waiting like a little potato until the treats are done. Other days, he steals the measuring spoon when I turn my back.
These treats became more than just snacks — they became a shared memory.
➡️ More ways to bond: Greek yogurt & frozen applesauce treats
Fridge : Store in airtight container for 5–7 days
Freezer : Freeze in zip bags up to 2 months
Serving : Great for training — just break in half!
➡️ Try frozen pumpkin summer treats too
Dough too sticky? ➝ Add more almond/oat flour
Too dry? ➝ Add a spoon of applesauce
Pup not interested? ➝ Mix in 1 tbsp peanut butter
Baking these treats made me realize something.
It’s not just about what goes into the bowl.
It’s about who waits beside you.
Andy might not know what “gluten free” means. But he knows love. And these treats? They’re packed with it.
So next time you're in the kitchen, invite your pup in.
Let them watch. Let them wait.
Let them taste the love — one tail wag at a time.
