There’s something about fall that makes me want to bake everything in sight—and it turns out, I’m not the only one in this house who thinks so. My dog Buddy , a very enthusiastic treat tester with a nose like a bloodhound, absolutely adores anything pumpkin. One chilly October afternoon, while roasting a pumpkin for soup, I decided to try baking something just for him.
That’s how these soft, chewy Pumpkin Almond Flour Dog Treats were born. They're wholesome, grain-free, and full of tail-wagging flavor—so good, I almost tasted one myself (okay... I did).
Buddy has a sensitive stomach and can’t tolerate grains very well, so most store-bought treats were out of the question. I wanted something:
Grain-free
Easy to make
Made with real ingredients I trust
And of course... something he’d actually love eating
These treats check all the boxes. And honestly? They make the kitchen smell amazing while baking. Warm, cozy, like pumpkin pie without the sugar.
You only need 4 simple, dog-safe ingredients —no preservatives, no fillers, and definitely no mystery additives.
1 cup pumpkin puree
(Make sure it’s pure pumpkin, not pumpkin pie filling!)
1¾ cups almond flour
(Grain-free and gentle on sensitive tummies)
1 egg
(For binding and a boost of protein)
1 tbsp coconut oil (melted)
(Adds healthy fats and keeps treats moist)
🔔 Optional Add-Ins:
A pinch of cinnamon (Ceylon cinnamon is safest)
1 tsp unsweetened applesauce for extra softness
Prep time: 5 minutes
Bake time: 20–25 minutes
Total time: 30 minutes
Yields: ~25 small bone-shaped treats
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C) .
Line a baking sheet with parchment paper or a silicone mat.
In a large bowl, combine pumpkin puree, egg, and coconut oil . Mix until smooth.
Add almond flour gradually and stir until a soft dough forms.
Roll out the dough between two sheets of parchment (about ½ inch thick).
Use a cookie cutter (we used bone-shaped!) to cut treats.
Place on the baking sheet and bake for 20–25 minutes , until edges are golden.
Let cool completely before serving. Tail wags guaranteed.
These treats aren’t just tasty—they’re packed with health-boosting goodness:
Pumpkin: High in fiber, great for digestion, and loaded with vitamin A
Almond Flour: Grain-free alternative that’s rich in protein and healthy fats
Coconut Oil: Promotes a healthy coat and supports brain health
Egg: Full of protein and essential amino acids for muscle health
Want to switch it up for your pup’s preferences?
Use mashed sweet potato instead of pumpkin
Add a spoonful of peanut butter (xylitol-free only!)
For a crunchier version, bake 5–7 minutes longer
For softer treats, add a teaspoon of unsweetened applesauce
The moment I open the can of pumpkin, Buddy is in the kitchen—tail swishing like a metronome. He knows what’s coming.
Sometimes, he just sits by the oven waiting, watching. And when the timer dings? I swear he knows it’s for him.
Making these treats isn’t just baking. It’s our little ritual. It slows me down and reminds me that food can be love.
Store in an airtight container at room temp for 3–4 days
Refrigerate for up to 1 week
Freeze extras for up to 2 months —thaw before serving
🎯 Pro Tip: These make great training treats if you cut them smaller before baking!
Too sticky? Add more almond flour, 1 tbsp at a time.
Too dry? Add a spoon of pumpkin or a dash of water.
Spread too much while baking? Chill the dough for 10 minutes before cutting shapes.
Treats too hard? Reduce bake time slightly or add applesauce for moisture.
If you’re like me, your dog isn’t just a pet—they’re family.
These Pumpkin Almond Flour Dog Treats have become a cozy little tradition in our home, especially during fall. And seeing Buddy’s eyes light up when I reach for the jar? Totally worth the 30 minutes it takes to make them.
So light a candle, throw on your favorite sweater, and bake up something your pup will never forget.
