It all started one chilly Sunday morning. I was sipping my coffee when I looked over and saw Luna—my sweet rescue lab mix—sitting patiently by the pantry. Her head tilted, eyes sparkling, tail thumping gently. She was waiting for her treat... the same store-bought ones we’d been giving her for months.
But recently, I noticed something: Luna had been scratching more than usual, and her tummy seemed off after certain treats. So, I flipped the package over—and wow. I couldn’t pronounce half the ingredients. 😬
That’s when I decided: If I wouldn’t eat it, why would I give it to her?
So I pulled out my silicone molds, rolled up my sleeves, and made my first batch of homemade dog treats using silicone molds . They came out adorably paw-shaped, soft but chewy, and 100% dog-approved. Luna? She devoured them like they were gourmet pastries.
The best part? These treats are made from simple, pantry-friendly ingredients that are both wholesome and safe for pups.
1 ripe banana , mashed
½ cup natural peanut butter (xylitol-free only!)
1 cup oat flour (or ground rolled oats)
¼ cup unsweetened applesauce
1 egg (optional – helps firm the texture)
✨ Optional add-ins: A sprinkle of cinnamon, a spoonful of pumpkin purée, or finely grated carrot.
📌 Prep Time: 10 minutes | Bake Time: 15–20 minutes | Makes ~24 small treats
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
In a mixing bowl, mash the banana until smooth.
Add peanut butter and applesauce , and mix until creamy.
Stir in the oat flour and optional egg.
Mix until a soft, spoonable dough forms.
Spoon the mixture into your silicone molds (bone, paw, heart—go wild!).
Place the mold on a baking tray and bake for 15–20 minutes until firm and lightly golden.
Let cool completely before popping out of the molds.
Each ingredient is handpicked for tail-wagging taste and health:
Banana: A potassium-rich energy booster
Peanut butter: Full of healthy fats and protein (just check for xylitol!)
Oat flour: Gentle on sensitive tummies and naturally gluten-free
Applesauce: A light touch of fiber and natural sweetness
Egg (optional): Extra protein and texture support
Every pup is different—and that’s the fun part! You can adjust this recipe for your dog’s needs:
Skip the egg for a softer, more chewy texture (great for older dogs).
Add pumpkin or sweet potato for extra fiber and fall flavor.
Freeze instead of bake for a summer treat! Just freeze in molds and serve cold.
Make it special: try silicone molds in fun seasonal shapes—like pumpkins for fall or stars for holidays!
Luna has a sixth sense for peanut butter. The moment I open the jar, she’s at my side, ears perked, paws doing a hopeful little tap dance.
We’ve made these treats together so many times now. She sits by the counter, watching every step, as if supervising the process. It’s become a cozy ritual—me stirring, her tail wagging, both of us enjoying a little extra togetherness.
Counter: Keep in an airtight container for up to 5 days.
Fridge: Store up to 2 weeks.
Freezer: Freeze for up to 3 months in a ziplock bag or container.
💡 Frozen treats can be a lifesaver for teething puppies or hot summer days! cracked open after turning it off for 1–2 hours.
Too sticky to fill molds? Chill the dough for 10–15 minutes or dust a spoon with oat flour.
Won’t release from the mold? Let them cool completely or pop the mold into the freezer for 5 minutes.
Too soft? Add 1–2 tbsp more oat flour or bake 5 minutes longer.
Making these treats started as a way to avoid preservatives—but it’s become something more.
It’s about giving Luna the very best, because she gives me her best every single day. It’s a small act of love, a bonding moment, and a reminder that the simplest things—like baking a batch of paw-shaped treats—can mean the most.
Watching her enjoy every bite, knowing it came from my hands and heart… that’s everything. 💛
