Wholesome Bites Straight From My Kitchen to My Dog’s Heart

Some recipes come from family.
This one came from love.

It was a crisp Sunday morning. Ruby was curled up beside me as I peeled apples for a pie. Her eyes said it all: “Is that for me?”

So I did what any dog mom would do — I made something just for her.

This cozy Pumpkin Apple Dog Treats recipe is fall in a bite — soft, nourishing, and tail-waggingly good .

Why I Started Making These Pumpkin Apple Dog Treats

Ruby used to get bored with the same old store-bought snacks. I’d flip the bag and see ingredients I couldn’t pronounce.

So I started experimenting — with banana peanut butter treats , Greek yogurt recipes , even frozen applesauce cubes .

But pumpkin + apple?

It made Ruby happy before the oven even finished preheating.

And bonus? It made my whole house smell like a dog-friendly pie shop.

Ingredient Benefits

Let’s break it down — like a dog nutritionist, but in dog mom language.

  • Pumpkin Purée – Full of fiber, helps Ruby’s digestion

  • Apples (peeled, finely diced) – Sweet, crunchy, rich in vitamin C and A

  • Oats – Keeps her full, gentle on the tummy

  • Egg – Adds protein and binds everything

  • Cinnamon (optional) – Adds cozy scent (just a pinch)

Want to skip oats? These No-Oats Banana Treats are a great option.

Recipe: Pumpkin Apple Dog Treats

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup pumpkin purée (not pie filling)

  • 1 small apple, peeled & finely diced

  • 2 ½ cups rolled oats (or almond flour for grain-free)

  • 1 egg

  • ½ tsp cinnamon (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking tray with parchment.

  2. Blend oats for finer texture (optional).

  3. Mix pumpkin, egg, apple, cinnamon.

  4. Stir in oats until dough forms.

  5. Roll into balls or press into silicone molds

  6. Bake 25–30 min until golden and firm.

Cool completely before Ruby gets a taste. She’ll thank you with sparkly eyes 🐾

Bonding With Ruby

Every time I roll out the dough, Ruby sits like a statue.

She knows what’s coming. She watches the tray go into the oven like it’s sacred.

When the timer dings?
Zoomies. Every. Time.

This isn’t just baking. It’s memory-making

.

Just like her birthday cake , this ritual gives us more than food. It gives us joy.

Storage Tips

Make extra — you’ll need it.

  • Room temp (sealed): 3–4 days

  • Fridge: 7–10 days

  • Freezer: Up to 2 months

✅ Always check before serving Ruby:

  • No mold or odd smell

  • Still firm or soft as intended

  • No sliminess or color change

What to Look for at the Store

When buying ingredients:

  • Pumpkin: Only 100% pumpkin purée (no sugar or spices)

  • Apples: Organic if possible. Avoid bruised ones. No seeds.

  • Oats: Rolled oats or old-fashioned oats (avoid instant)

  • Eggs: Fresh, free-range if available

  • Cinnamon: Only Ceylon for dogs (if used at all)

Avoid anything labeled “pumpkin pie mix” or “sweetened applesauce” — those are packed with sugar and unsafe extras for dogs.

Troubleshooting

Issue Solution
Dough too sticky Add more oats or chill 10 mins
Dough too dry Add pumpkin or a splash of water
Treats too soft Bake 5–10 min longer or reduce wet ingredients
Dog bored of taste Add carrots, blueberries, or xylitol-free PB
