A wholesome recipe made with love, wagging tails, and pantry staples.
When I first brought home Axel , my golden retriever rescue, I had no idea how much he would change my life. He’s taught me to slow down, be present, and appreciate the little things—like muddy paw prints, warm snuggles, and the joy of a simple homemade treat.
One rainy afternoon, with Axel peacefully napping at my feet on the couch, I started browsing online for dog treat options. But almost every ingredient list was packed with things I didn’t recognize or feel comfortable feeding him—and that just didn’t sit right with me.
So I followed my instincts. I walked into the kitchen, grabbed a ripe banana, a crisp apple, and a spoonful of peanut butter, and started mixing. What came out of the oven was a soft, chewy treat that had Axel’s tail wagging like crazy. Now, every afternoon, he trots over to the freezer like clockwork—waiting patiently for his favorite homemade snack.
And on the days I don’t feel like turning on the oven, I make this easy no-bake version of the peanut butter banana treats instead—it only takes a few minutes and is made with the same kind of love.
Here’s what you’ll need to whip up these simple, dog-safe goodies:
1 ripe banana , mashed
1/2 cup unsweetened applesauce (no added sugar or xylitol)
1/3 cup xylitol-free peanut butter (check the label!)
1 1/2 cups oat flour (or blended oats)
Optional: 1 egg for firmer texture or 1 tbsp ground flaxseed for added fiber
Prep Time : 10 minutes
Bake Time : 12–15 minutes
Total Time : 25 minutes
Makes : ~20 small treats
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a large bowl, mash the banana until smooth.
Stir in applesauce and peanut butter until fully combined.
Add the oat flour and mix until a dough forms. Add the egg or flaxseed if using.
Roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thick on a floured surface.
Use small cookie cutters (hearts and bones are our fave) to cut out treats.
Place treats on the baking sheet and bake for 12–15 minutes , or until edges are lightly golden.
Let cool completely before serving to your pup.
These treats aren’t just tasty—they’re packed with dog-friendly nutrition:

Mix in crushed dog biscuits for extra crunch
Axel always knows when I’m baking for him. He sits by the kitchen door, tail thumping, nose in the air. I talk to him while rolling out the dough, and he “supervises” the entire time. The moment the oven timer dings, his ears perk up like clockwork. It’s our little ritual—and one that brings both of us joy.
Fridge : Store in an airtight container for up to 5 days
Freezer : Freeze for up to 2 months. Just thaw before serving!
Serve as a snack, training reward, or in a puzzle toy
🎉 Pro Tip: Freeze a few in a silicone mold with extra applesauce for a cooling summer treat!

This recipe started as a way to avoid junky store-bought treats, but it’s become something more. It’s a way for me to show Axel I love him in a language he understands—through food, time, and presence.
