The first time I made these, I poured the bright green mixture into silicone brain molds I’d bought for a Halloween party. When my guests opened the freezer and saw rows of green “brains” stacked neatly, there was a collective gasp. Some were a little freaked out — until they saw Charlotte trotting over, tail wagging, and happily crunching into one. Suddenly, everyone wanted the recipe, and a few friends even ordered the same molds so they could make batches for their own dogs.

Why I Started Making DIY Dog Halloween Treats

Halloween can still be warm in the early evening where I live, so I wanted a spooky-themed treat that would help cool my dog down after a round of zoomies in her costume. That’s how Zombie Gut-sicles were born — bright green, brain-shaped frozen treats that look creepy enough to get a laugh but taste fresh, cool, and delicious to dogs.

Recipe: Candy Corn Frozen Yogurt Bites

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup fresh spinach

  • ½ cup unsweetened applesauce

  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt (unsweetened)

  • Use green food coloring to make the color more vibrant (optional).

Instructions:

  1. Blend spinach, applesauce, and yogurt until completely smooth.

  2. Pour the mixture into Halloween-themed silicone molds (brains, bones, pumpkins — get creative).

  3. Freeze for at least 4 hours or until solid.

  4. Pop out and serve chilled for a spooky-cool snack.

Common Issues & Fixes

  • Too hard to bite? Let sit for 2–3 minutes before serving.

  • Too thick to blend? Add a splash of water or coconut water.

Bonding with My Dog During Prep

Charlotte doesn’t need an invitation — the second she hears the blender whir, she comes running. She sits close by, watching every move, and gets to lick the spoon once the mixture is done. It’s our little pre-treat ritual.

Customizing the Recipe

  • Swap spinach for kale for a darker green.

  • Add blueberries for a purple “monster” version.

  • Use bone broth instead of applesauce for a savory twist.

Storage Tips

  • Freezer: Store treats in an airtight container or freezer bag for up to 2 months.

  • Prevent sticking: Place a layer of parchment paper between stacks so the “brains” don’t freeze together.

  • Single-serve hack: Freeze in silicone molds, then pop them out and transfer to a freezer-safe bag — makes it easy to grab just one at a time.

  • Serving tip: Let sit at room temperature for 2–3 minutes before giving to your dog if they’re too hard.

Final Thoughts:

With their creepy appearance and refreshing taste, these DIY Dog Halloween Treats – Zombie Gut-sicles are guaranteed to be a hit at any dog-friendly Halloween party. They’re simple to make, loaded with nutrients, and give pups a festive way to cool down — all while making humans smile (or squirm) when they see the “brains” in the freezer.
